Meet Our New State Policy Counsel: Sa’Metria Jones

Family Equality is thrilled to introduce our new State Policy Counsel, Sa’Metria Jones! Sa’Metria brings a wealth of experience and passion to this role, and we are so excited to have her on our Policy team, fighting for our lived and legal equality!

Sa’Metria Jones, State Policy Counsel

Sa’Metria Jones is a licensed attorney and advocate who joined Family Equality in September 2021 as the State Policy Counsel. 

Sa’Metria is from Raleigh, North Carolina. She graduated from UNC School of Law in 2017 with her Juris Doctor and is licensed to practice law in North Carolina.  Sa’Metria is also pursuing a Master in Public Administration at UNC School of Government and anticipates completing the program in December 2021. 

Before joining Family Equality, Sa’Metria worked as a Public Benefits Staff Attorney at Legal Aid of North Carolina and a Policy Advisor in the North Carolina Office of the Governor She has experience in civil litigation, administrative law, and state government policy and administration. 

Sa’Metria is passionate about helping people overcome legal barriers that interfere with their ability to experience freedom, love, health, and prosperity. She remains in Raleigh, North Carolina near her family and enjoys physical fitness, live music, all things food-related, and traveling.

My favorite podcasts are “The Daily,” “Today Explained,” and “Courtroom Junkie.” My favorite book that has yet to be dethroned is the Color of Law.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working? Traveling, wine festivals, music festivals, food truck rodeos, reading, and spending time with friends and family

What drives you to do this work? I identify as an Ally and acknowledge that, in addition to learning myself, that I can use my privilege to educate others and contribute to legal and lived change that will positively impact a community I care deeply about. As an advocate with experience working with marginalized communities, I am motivated by the relief and pure joy I see in others who feel heard and seen, in addition to accomplishing monumental feats that will make their lives and this world a better place.

What does family equality mean to you? Family Equality to me means love, opportunity, and access.
