Sarah Hyde, Director of Program Events
Sarah Hyde (she/they) joined the Family Equality team as Director of Program Events in February 2023. Sarah has worked in LGBTQ+ nonprofit spaces for the last decade, and in that time managed volunteers for large-scale events at organizations including the National AIDS Memorial, the It Gets Better Project, San Francisco Pride, Folsom Street Fair, Frameline Film Festival, and more. Ask them about the time they stood in the middle of Giants Stadium as the SF Dykes on Bikes circled the baseball diamond!
Sarah is also a certified sex educator, abortion doula, and domestic violence advocate. Her early career roots are in building and facilitating curricula and events on healthy relationship skills and sex education for queer and trans youth. She utilizes the frameworks of harm reduction, mutual aid, and restorative justice in all of the work that she does. They are compelled by the mission of Family Equality and aim to create events that are accessible, equitable, and centering on trans and BIPOC folks.
Sarah lives in Oakland, CA with their wonderful partner Atom. You can catch her at a burlesque show, browsing her favorite grocery store (shout out to Berkeley Bowl), or watering her 30+ houseplants.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?
I am an avid home cook and baker, so you can find me in the kitchen covered in flour or on my favorite sites looking for the next great bite. I also love to dance, lift weights, and search for jazz records with my partner.
What drives you to do this work?
As a queer and genderqueer person, and as an events nerd, I am passionate about creating spaces for joy and solidarity for our community. I am inspired to follow in the long legacy of queer and trans people finding creative ways to connect, celebrate, and organize for justice. It is my goal to create event spaces that are accessible, equitable, and fun!
What does family equality mean to you?
To me, it means that queer and trans people have the rights, resources, and access to build our families and communities in a way that allows LGBTQ+ people to thrive for generations to come.
