New York, N.Y. – In response to last week’s tragedy in Georgia, which took the lives of eight individuals—including six Asian women, and the recent, distressing wave of anti-Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) hate and harassment, Family Equality issued the following statement:
“Our hearts are with the victims, families, and communities affected by what happened in Georgia this week. AAPI community members, particularly Asian women, have been experiencing discrimination, physical assault, and verbal harassment at historically high rates during the COVID-19 pandemic. But, this pattern of xenophobia is not new—it’s part of a deeply disturbing history of anti-Asian racism, white supremacy, and misogyny in our country.
We must do more to support and protect our AAPI communities and family members. As such, Family Equality renews its commitment to combatting hate, bigotry, and discrimination in all its forms. Our mission—to achieve full equality for all families—can not be achieved until we center anti-racism and defeat white supremacy. We join the voices of our colleagues and millions across the nation in promising to stop Asian hate.”
