Family Equality Council Calls for Immigration Reform Inclusive of LGBT Families

Family Equality Council, which connects, supports and represents the three million parents in our country who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) and their six million children, today issued a statement praising Senator Patrick Leahy (VT) for filing two amendments that will ensure gay and lesbian families will be included in comprehensive immigration reform.  One amendment would add the Uniting American Families Act to the bill and the other would provide the same immigration benefits that binational couples would receive if DOMA were repealed.

“There are 36,000 binational couples in our country and almost half of them are raising children,” said Family Equality Council Director of Public Policy Emily Hecht-McGowan. “We fully support both amendments. Chairman Leahy is a champion for binational families and understands that our immigration laws must keep them together instead of tearing them apart.”
