Family Equality Launches Virtual Hub for Home-Bound LGBTQ+ Families and Parents During COVID-19 Pandemic

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Today Family Equality announced the launch of “The Neighborhood: A Virtual Hub for LGBTQ+ Families” which contains a rapidly growing calendar of live-streamed and virtual activities, meet-up groups, and other online resources for LGBTQ+ families and parents sheltering at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Family Equality is the nation’s leading resource and advocacy organization for LGBTQ+ families and prospective parents. As the list of cancellations, closures, and other news surrounding coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) grows, so does the need for home-based virtual educational content for children and meet-up spaces for adults. The Neighborhood offers LGBTQ+ families and those who wish to form them a chance to tune into and participate in live events on Family Equality’s website or on Facebook, queue up pre-recorded events on YouTube, or — in the case of peer support spaces and other meet-ups — join virtual conference rooms of other parents and families for themed discussions.

“Under these unprecedented circumstances, Family Equality is focused on meeting the new and evolving needs of LGBTQ+ families and prospective parents across the country,” said The Rev. Stan J. Sloan, CEO of Family Equality. “Our community is facing so many new challenges, from juggling work-from-home and parenting schedules to shielding our children from the anxieties of daily life, and our team at Family Equality is committed to sharing these burdens and opening up virtual space for our families to connect in these difficult times. We are enormously grateful for the continued generosity of our supporters and donors who are ensuring we can provide these important services to the LGBTQ+ community.”

In the days and weeks ahead, Family Equality plans to add a number of new activities, meetups, and resources to The Neighbhorhood’s programming, such as sing-alongs and drag storytimes for young kids; creative writing workshops and LGBTQ+ history courses for teens; dance classes and drag makeup tutorials for the whole family; and meet-ups for parents of color, transgender and nonbinary/gender non-conforming parents, and more.
