Marriage And Adoption In Best Interests Of Kids With Parents Who Are LGBT

POWERFUL STATEMENT ISSUED BY AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS

Washington, DC – (Mar. 21, 2013) – The Family Equality Council today issued a statement acknowledging a new, powerful statement of support from the American Academy of Pediatrics on the positive benefits of marriage and non-discriminatory adoption/foster care polices for children with parents who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.

“On behalf of the three million parents in our country who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and their six million children, the Family Equality Council welcomes the statement by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) that marriage strengthens our families,” said spokesperson Steve Majors.

“The statement by the AAP also reaffirms more than 30 years of social science research that concludes that children grow up with the same positive developmental outcomes whether their parents are of the same gender or different genders. More importantly, it matches the lived experiences of many of our parents who have raised a generation of children into young adulthood who are successful by every measure.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recognizes the truth that families will be strengthened as more loving and committed couples gain the freedom to marry, the ability to foster/adopt children without discrimination, and the power to raise families that are fully recognized and respected under the law.”
